Doctors Wisot and Meldrum publish 2nd edition of book that helped
thousands of infertile couples conceive
Two Southern California fertility pioneers who "wrote the book" on in
vitro fertilization and other assisted reproduction techniques and
published it under the title Conceptions and Misconceptions, have just
released a second edition of this book that has helped thousands of
infertile couples conceive.
Arthur L. Wisot, M.D., and
David Meldrum, M.D. of
Reproductive Partners
Medical Group (RPMG) in Beverly Hills and Redondo Beach, CA published
the first edition of Conceptions and Misconceptions in 1997 after
discovering from their patients the need for clear, understandable and
unbiased information about the complex and rapidly growing world of
assisted reproduction.
The second edition of this book, published by Hartley and Marks
Publishers, is a completely updated and revised version that provides
clear, concise information on topics ranging from the latest assisted
reproduction technologies to consumer issues.
In the latest edition, readers can accompany a patient on a 30-day
journey through a cycle of IVF and discover both the physical and
emotional impacts of fertility treatment. There is an all-new new
chapter on the role of complementary and alternative methods in
fertility treatment, including a balanced look at acupuncture,
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), nutrition, and the mind-body
connection. The authors also delve into newer fertility issues that
include pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), surrogacy, and
consumer issues helping the reader avoid pitfalls such as unethical
advertising, misleading statistics and outright fraud.
"This updated and revised edition can help couples have a baby by
empowering them with the knowledge they need to make informed
decisions," explained Dr. Wisot. "It can help them maximize their
chances for success as they embark on their hope-filled journey into
parenthood."
In the book's second chapter on "Misconceptions," the authors encourage
infertility consumers to be wary of their own special vulnerabilities
while considering advertised treatments and financial programs. Dr.
Wisot elaborates here that "The 'misconception' I refer to [in the book]
as, 'There is such a thing as a free lunch,' refers to doctor-sponsored
'money-back guarantees.' The Integramed™ Shared Risk® Refund Program overcomes
all the objections to doctor-sponsored plans. First, the Integramed
program provides full disclosure of the financial ramifications. Second,
the doctor does not have a financial stake in the outcome of treatment,
avoiding the temptation of a doctor to treat more aggressively to avoid
returning a patient?s money. Third, it assures the couples that the
doctors associated with the plan enjoy excellent success rates because
Integramed is financially motivated to allow only outstanding doctors
and centers to participate. I have personally recommended it to many
couples."
Alan H. DeCherney, M.D., Division Chief of Reproductive Endocrinology at
UCLA School of Medicine is impressed by the authors? approach, style and
content.
"Wisot and Meldrum?s book offers a unique and refreshing approach," he
said. "It?s readable and scientifically sound, and complex concepts are
presented in a fashion that makes them easy to understand and remember.
Theirs is a compassionate and hopeful method."
